A confusing question?

Which of the following are TRUE regarding buffers? (Check all that apply):

- A 50/50 mixture of 1M acetic acid and 1M sodium hydroxide will make a buffer.

- Buffers are often present in biological systems.

- A 50/50 mixture of 1M acetic acid and 1M sodium acetate will make a buffer.

-pH buffers are added to shampoos and other cosmetic products.

-A buffer in chemistry is a machine used to polish shoes and equipment.

- Buffers are a mixture of an acid and its conjugate base in roughly equal proportions.

-A 60/40 mixture of 1M ammonia and 1M ammonium nitrate will make a buffer.

-Buffers help keep the pH constant.

-Buffers help keep the pOH constant.

-Man-made buffers were first invented by Robert Boyle.

A confusing question?
1. False, a buffer is a acid and it's conjugate base or a base and it's conjugate acid.

2. True, phosphate buffer system and carbonate buffer system

3. True, same reasoning as #1

4.True

5. False

6. True, it doesn't have to be a 50/50 mixture, as long as it contains a acid/base and it's conjugate. Better buffers are 50/50

7. True

8. Also true

9. I dont know, this isn't really a chemistry question - it's more of a histroy question, but i doubt Boyle was the first. Robert Good invented the first really effective buffers, so named the Good buffers.
Reply:I think "Buffers help keep the pH constant." is true.
