Is it bad to put black nail polish over a very damaged toenail? And what should I be doing about this toenail?

OKAY so now that spring is here I will be wearing mostly flip flops so I decided to paint over my horror of a toenail. It is seriously nasty! I don't even know how it happened, it is only the one toe that is this bad (big toe!)well i think it came from these shoes which were too tight that I use to work in for hours on end. Anyway, it doesn't hurt. Well, it does a little. I mean... it isn't a stabbing unbearable pain, I could walk and stuff. It is a little bit sore if I touch the nail and it is black underneath and practically falling off. VERY GROSS! I don't know what to do about it, is letting it go until it falls off and grows a new nail okay? Or should I be seeing a Podiatrist about this ? And is it bad to put black nail polish on it or does it need to breathe in order to heal? Will it ever heal? I mean it has been months now and I am sacred. WHAT DO I DO!!!?

It is bad to put black nail polish on any time. It suffocates the nail so I'd say try not to wear that color period! As for your toe, I don't think you need the doctor unless it really hurts and looks much worse. It is normal for it to take a long time to heal.
Reply:you said it is hurting and black underneath you have a fungul infection you should really see a podiatrist and have it removed,


if you dont want to do that i suggest you soak it as much as you can and dry it, dont cover it over with ANYTHING it needs air to breathe try sitting with your toe out in the sun


and it will take time to heal or drop off one of the two you can,t rush it
Reply:The black part means that the toenail is dead there. use clippers and cut off the black part as much as you can. Use Neosporin daily. Wrap with band-aids when wearing shoes and leave open when not. I had something similar happen to my great toe nail. I had a toe nail that was too long and it banged up against the inside of my shoe while walking/dancing. It hurt bad and turned black. It started to separate from the skin underneath. I cut back the nail and babied it as much as possible. Within 3 months it was back to normal. I've never had any other trouble from it. Good luck with yours!! P.S. Definately don't paint it and don't hesitate to go see a doctor if it doesn't get any better!!
Reply:toenails take time to regrow...my daughter smashed her thumb months ago and its just now regrown and the old part fell off...do not polish your toenail you need to let it get some light..thats why it takes so long for toenails to grow...if it doesnt start to look better within two weeks of sandals only go to a foot dr...it could have an infection
