Is it true that in Germany there's a custom of 'punishing' individuals who reach 30 without getting married?

I heard that unmarried people of this age are taken to the local City Hall, where men are made to sweep the stairs and women have to clean a doorhandle covered in shoe polish. Has anyone come across this or similar customs, either in Germany or elsewhere?

I don't know for sure - all I can say is that in England, such people (like me) are punished by having to go to Over-30s Discos, see fat and old women with no care for dress sense dancing to crap songs like Mystery Girl and I'm in the Mood for Dancing week after week after week and being sold crap beer to drink whilst standing around wondering where it all went wrong
