February 4th... Today In Black History...Did you Know......?

That on this day in 1913 ROSA PARKS was born.

Now the majority of us should know why she is significant to black history. If not, I will provide a link at the end of this question. Rosa Parks lived in a time of the "Jim Crow Laws" which were state and local laws that mandated "separate but equal" status for black Americans. The name "Jim Crow" came from a song and dance called "Jump Jim Crow" that was made by a white comedian named Thomas Rice. He performed this in "blackface" which is the term used by performers who used burnt cork, greasepaint or shoe polish to blacken their

skin and exaggerate their lips among other

things. It became popular at "minstrel shows"

which portrayed blacks in stereotypical and often insulting ways such as ignorant, lazy, buffoonish, superstitious, joyous, and musical.

If you had to present in 5 songs a POSITIVE

IMAGE of hip hop as a culture to an

individual..."looking from the outside in"...

What five songs would they be and why?
