Egg shells are mostly Calcium Carbonate. If you heat Calcium Carbonate to a high enough temperature it will decompose and form Calcium Oxide (quicklime.) Add water to quicklime and you get slaked lime (Calcium Hydroxide.) Slaked lime is the main ingredient in whitewash a common substitute for paint. Whitewash is mostly slaked lime suspended in water. When painted on surfaces it slowly reacts with Carbon dioxide in the air to form Calcium Carbonate. As such it isn't a very good paint but it can be improved by mixing in glue, milk, water glass or other additives. Whitewash used to be popular for painting barns and fences (remember Tom Sawyer?)





I think it would take a lot of egg shells (and fuel to heat them) to make enough whitewash to do anything useful. A bag of slaked lime from a feed store would probably be easier and cheaper.

Reply:None of that stuff can be done with egg shell. Egg shells are only good for taking the bitterness out of coffee and as a nice container for the egg. After use throw them in the garbage. Get your paint and shoe polish at a store.

Reply:You can grind Egg shells into a Powder(Using Mortar and Pestle).


To develop it into a Paint you will need some Binding agent(Like varnish), this Holds the particles together so it can be spread or brushed.


This method applies to most naturally occurring substances.


Artists in the 16 Hundreds made most pigment by using naturally occurring substances(Some were toxic or had low level Radiation values)
Reply:You can grind the shell into powder for mixing with pigment and you can use the white part of the inside (ya know not the yolk, as binder, it's sticky) It will take some perfecting. Grind the shell into consistent fine powder, no chunks. The clear goo was also used in early photography, research "albumin" in art.
Reply:you can paint the shells but Im not sure about Making paint with them. You can make egg people, If you have chickens or parakeets you can crush them and give them to your pet bird for calcium. But to make paint with them unsure. Sorry Im no help here.

Reply:I prefer the hard boiled product you can make from egg shells. Yeah, you just boil the whole thing for 10 minutes in water before emptying the egg shell. I don't like any of those other things you asked about; I think they would be very distasteful...





Also, you get to recycle the egg shell contents if you choose the hard boiled product. Very enviro-friendly...
