Black stains on carpet?

We have tan colored carpet and not long after my husband got a new job we started seeing black spots along the heavy traffic area. We think that it is from my husband's boots, maybe shoe polish. I have steam cleaned the carpet and for the most part they disappear for a few months and then return again. Is there any way to completely get rid of the spots for good? Thanks!

If they are disappearing and returning in the exact same spot, it could be mold/mildew. Did you install the carpet new? If not, it could be moisture left over from a previous cleaning or a high moisture in your home. It could also be left over stain that was not completely removed from a dog, etc. Anything that makes the carpet wet and is not thoroughly dried out, can cause mildew/mold to appear. You don't see it at first, until it starts growing. I would go to a reputable flooring store and ask them if they have any products that you can use to try to remove the stain. There are some dry powder products that the professionals use that you sort of "rake" into the carpet and then vacuum.

Good luck.
Reply:Update: Shoepolish is a possibilty. If it is mold then it is probably on the flooring. How humbug is it to pull back the carpetting to check underneath?

How thick are the spots./stains? Is the humidity or moisture elevated in your home? Have you had any leaks?

I am curious if it is a stain or if it's mold.

When you clean an area of carpet if you leave detergent residue on the spot it may actually attract more dirt, and spots may show back up.
Reply:I buy Mule Team Borax in the laundry section. Mix about 1/4 cup in a bowl of warm water and rub the spot gently. This works great on any color carpet. I also add to my laundry-it removes odors and brightens whites. It is better than Oxy clean and costs alot less.
Reply:I don't think so... try oxy clean.. and steam clean it very well.. but if that doesn't work then theres nothing you can do....men and there messes!
Reply:Seems like your husband is walking through a parking lot that has been freshly tarred. Try SPOT SHOT from any hardware store.
